Natalie Slade – Control LP

Natalie Slade - Control LP (2020)

Natalie Slade’s Control is a stunning debut album that effortlessly blends neo-soul, jazz, and R&B into a cohesive and deeply soulful experience. Released in 2020 on Eglo Records, the album is produced by Australian beatmaker Simon Mavin (of Hiatus Kaiyote fame), and it showcases Slade’s powerful voice and exceptional songwriting abilities. With Control, Slade offers a fresh yet timeless take on modern soul, delivering a record that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.

The album opens with "Cloud Cover," a track that immediately highlights Slade’s velvety smooth vocals and her ability to convey emotion with subtlety and nuance. The production is lush, with warm keys, soft percussion, and a groove that feels both relaxed and deeply rooted in jazz influences. The lyrics, exploring themes of introspection and emotional resilience, set the tone for an album that is as much about personal empowerment as it is about musical exploration.

"Love Light" follows, bringing a more upbeat, funky vibe to the mix. The track’s infectious rhythm, tight bassline, and shimmering synths create a sound that’s both modern and steeped in classic soul traditions. Slade’s voice glides effortlessly over the groove, delivering a performance that is both confident and full of warmth. The chorus is particularly memorable, with its catchy hook and uplifting message of love and light.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Control," the title track, which delves deeper into the album’s themes of self-discovery and empowerment. The production here is more stripped back, allowing Slade’s vocals to take center stage. Her voice is rich and emotive, conveying a sense of strength and vulnerability that resonates throughout the track. The minimalist arrangement, featuring just a few carefully chosen instrumental elements, adds to the track’s impact, making it one of the most powerful moments on the album.

Throughout Control, tracks like "Catch a Break" and "The Morning" showcase Slade’s versatility as an artist. "Catch a Break" is a groovy, mid-tempo number with jazzy chords and a laid-back vibe, while "The Morning" slows things down with a more introspective, ballad-like feel. Both tracks highlight Slade’s ability to move seamlessly between different moods and styles, while maintaining a consistent, cohesive sound.

"Steady" brings a touch of neo-soul magic, with its smooth, flowing rhythm and soulful melody. The production is rich and layered, with intricate percussion and lush harmonies that create a warm, enveloping sound. Slade’s vocals are at their best here, delivering a performance that is both soothing and deeply emotional. The track’s message of finding stability and peace within oneself resonates strongly, making it another highlight of the album.

The album closes with "One Step Closer," a track that brings the journey full circle with its reflective lyrics and soulful melody. The arrangement is simple yet effective, allowing Slade’s voice to shine through and deliver the album’s final, powerful message of growth and self-awareness.

Control is a remarkable debut that firmly establishes Natalie Slade as a significant new voice in the world of neo-soul and R&B. The album’s blend of soulful melodies, jazz-infused grooves, and introspective lyrics creates a listening experience that is both deeply engaging and emotionally resonant. Slade’s voice is the true star of the album, carrying each song with grace, power, and a sense of authenticity that is rare in today’s music landscape.

For fans of modern soul, jazz, and R&B, Control is a must-listen. It’s an album that invites you to slow down, listen deeply, and connect with the music on a personal level. Natalie Slade has delivered a debut that is as confident as it is soulful, making Control a standout release in 2020.
