I Kong - Pass It On LP (2016)

I Kong’s Pass It On LP is a heartfelt and soulful reggae album that captures the essence of roots reggae while delivering a message of love, unity, and spiritual consciousness. Released in 2016, this album marks a significant return for I Kong—the Jamaican singer who originally gained fame in the 1970s with his classic album The Way It Is. On Pass It On, I Kong collaborates with Switzerland’s Najavibes band, blending rich, traditional reggae sounds with modern production, resulting in a record that feels both timeless and relevant.

The album opens with the title track, "Pass It On," a song that immediately sets the tone with its deep, steady rhythm and uplifting lyrics. I Kong’s voice, weathered yet strong, carries a sense of wisdom and experience as he sings about the importance of sharing love and positive energy. The backing band provides a solid foundation, with tight basslines, crisp drums, and warm, melodic guitar riffs that create a classic roots reggae sound.

"Guiding Light" follows, offering a more introspective vibe. The track’s slower tempo and reflective lyrics invite the listener to look within and find strength in spiritual guidance. The use of harmonies and subtle dub effects adds depth to the song, making it one of the standout tracks on the album. I Kong’s vocal delivery is sincere and heartfelt, conveying a deep sense of conviction in the message of the song.

Throughout the album, Najavibes band shines, providing a rich musical backdrop that perfectly complements I Kong’s vocals. Tracks like "Overcome" and "Motherless Child" showcase the band’s ability to blend traditional reggae rhythms with elements of jazz and soul, creating a sound that is both familiar and fresh. The instrumental arrangements are intricate yet understated, allowing I Kong’s voice and lyrics to take center stage.

"Cool It Down" is another highlight, with its laid-back groove and soothing melody. The song’s message of peace and relaxation is delivered with a gentle, calming tone, making it a perfect track for unwinding and reflecting. The use of horns and keyboards adds a layer of richness to the sound, enhancing the overall vibe of the track.

The album closes with "Always Remember," a poignant and emotional track that serves as a reminder to cherish the memories of loved ones and hold onto the lessons they’ve taught. The song’s reflective lyrics and soulful delivery make it a fitting conclusion to the album, leaving the listener with a sense of closure and peace.

Pass It On is a powerful and moving album that reaffirms I Kong’s place as a significant figure in the world of roots reggae. The album’s blend of traditional and modern elements, combined with its positive and uplifting messages, makes it a must-listen for fans of the genre. I Kong’s voice, filled with emotion and wisdom, is perfectly complemented by the skilled musicianship of Najavibes band, resulting in a record that is both musically rich and spiritually resonant.
