Gizelle Smith - Ruthless Day (2018)

Gizelle Smith’s Ruthless Day is a vibrant and powerful exploration of modern soul, funk, and R&B, showcasing the British singer’s formidable talent and unmistakable voice. Released in 2018, this album marks Smith’s return to the spotlight after her well-received debut with The Mighty Mocambos. On Ruthless Day, Smith steps out as a solo artist with a collection of tracks that blend classic soul and funk influences with a contemporary edge, creating a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

The album opens with the title track, "Ruthless Day," a song that immediately sets the tone with its driving rhythm, bold horns, and Smith’s commanding vocals. The lyrics tell a story of resilience and determination, themes that resonate throughout the album. Smith’s voice is a standout here—soulful, gritty, and full of emotion, she delivers each line with conviction and energy, drawing the listener into her world.

"Hero" follows, bringing a slightly more upbeat, danceable groove. The infectious bassline and crisp percussion provide the perfect backdrop for Smith’s vocal performance, which is both playful and assertive. The track’s catchy hook and tight production make it one of the album’s highlights, showcasing Smith’s ability to craft songs that are as memorable as they are musically rich.

Throughout Ruthless Day, Smith demonstrates her versatility as an artist. Tracks like "Love Song" and "Dust" delve into deeper, more introspective territory, with lush arrangements and reflective lyrics that reveal a more vulnerable side. The production on these tracks is warm and organic, with rich instrumentation that complements Smith’s vocals without overpowering them. The result is a sound that feels intimate and personal, inviting the listener to connect with the music on a deeper level.

"Sweet Memories" brings a touch of classic Motown influence, with its upbeat tempo, soulful backing vocals, and irresistible groove. The song’s nostalgic vibe is balanced by its modern production, creating a track that pays homage to the past while still feeling relevant today. It’s a perfect example of how Smith blends her influences to create something uniquely her own.

The album closes with "Amen," a slow-burning, gospel-tinged track that highlights Smith’s vocal prowess and emotional depth. The sparse arrangement allows her voice to take center stage, delivering a powerful and heartfelt performance that leaves a lasting impression. It’s a fitting end to an album that is as much about storytelling as it is about musicality.

Ruthless Day is a strong and cohesive album that firmly establishes Gizelle Smith as a force in the modern soul and funk scene. While the album draws heavily on classic influences, it never feels derivative; instead, Smith uses these inspirations as a foundation to build something that is distinctly her own. The result is an album that is both timeless and contemporary, offering something for fans of classic soul as well as those looking for fresh, new sounds.

For those who appreciate music that is both soulful and dynamic, Ruthless Day is a must-listen. It’s an album that showcases Gizelle Smith’s growth as an artist and her ability to craft songs that are both emotionally resonant and musically engaging.
